Doug Ford slams Carney EV deal with China

Ontario Premier Doug Ford slammed the electric vehicle (EV) deal Prime Minister Mark Carney’s struck with China on Friday. It will see 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) imported each year.

“Don’t use Ontario and the auto workers here as a pawn. Everyone got something except Ontario — all we got was a massive threat of Chinese vehicles,” Ford said. Asked about his comments that Chinese EVs use technology to spy on their users, Ford said, “it’s pretty simple, when the prime minister and his team were over there, they used burner phones. You’re making a deal with a country with burner phones?” “We know when you hook up your phone, they’re going to be listening… and anyone who doesn’t believe that is very naïve,” the premier continued.

Ford says he has yet to speak to Carney about the deal.
